Summer
is a time associated
with outdoor fun, but Emergency Room doctors will
tell you it is also the time when accidental injuries
to children skyrocket. Some simple guidelines can
help insure your children’s safety during the Summer
months.
Window Safety
Young children are at a risk from falling out of
unguarded windows. New York City requires that in
multiple dwelling apartments where a child under
ten years old resides there must be window guards
on all windows (other than those leading to fire
escapes). Landlords are required to provide tenants
with forms asking whether children under ten reside
in their apartment, and must install window guards
when on notice that they do.
Unopened windows should be locked, and furniture should
be pulled away from windows so that the risk of
children climbing up onto window sills
|
is minimized. Make sure that
any cords from blinds are out of your child’s reach.
Playgrounds and
Park Safety
Playgrounds and Parks are a great source of fun
during the Summer months, and following a few simple
guidelines can make sure that they are a safe source
of fun too.
Never leave children unattended by water. Even a
small or shallow “kiddie pool” can be dangerous,
because children can drown in as little as one inch
of water.
If your child enjoys biking, rollerblading, skateboarding
or riding a scooter, make sure that they know they have
to wear a helmet at all times.
When
in the Playground supervise your children carefully
and make sure they stay clear of the front and back
of swings when they are in use. Remove drawstrings
from windbreakers,
|
sweatshirts or other outerwear
to prevent the risk of strangulation.
Keep
children away from fires and barbeques, and always
have water around when a fire is in use. Never let
a child use lighter fluid, and never leave lighter
fluid unattended.
Bug Bites and Sun Safety
Applying inset repellent to clothes and exposed
skin is a good way to avoid bites, but many insect
repellents are too strong for a small child with
sensitive skin. Consult with your child’s Pediatrician
about what product is best for them.
Make
sure that your children wear plenty of Sun Screen
which provides a protection level of 15 SPF pr greater.
It is best to apply Sun Screen at least 15 minutes
before exposure to the Sun.
